A rant on company contacts and mobile glitches

Why do companies insist on making it difficult to contact them?

So many companies (especially primarily internet companies, but many others too) don’t publish a nice simple email address that I can use to contact them. This is annoying.

When I’ve got a problem, I’ll normally do a fair amount of research/troubleshooting before contacting them. Often, this information cannot be put into such a contact form, as they often limit the amount of text that can be entered.

The other common problem with these forms is that they insist on categorising your request, and give a drop down of options to cover what you’re contacting them about… and omit an “other” option.

I just want a general “customer service” email address I can send things to!

Anyway… there is of course a specific situation which prompted this little rant. In this case, the problem with the web forms originates from the fact that I want to send the same information to TWO companies simultaneously. Email’s great for this - I could just sent it to both of them at once and I’ll be able to track both sets of responses easily.

Since I can’t do that, I’m going to post the situation here, and then ping the two companies on twitter and hope they pay attention. They probably won’t though.

Anyway…

The two companies in question are Three UK and Vodafone UK. I am a Three customer. My mother is a Vodafone customer.

Firstly, we’re pretty sure that neither of our phones is the source of the problem, since they’re behaving normally in other regards.

So, my mother recently travelled to see her parents (my grandparents). Upon her arrival, she sent me a text message to let me know that she’d arrived. According to the message details (as viewed on my phone), this text was sent at 13:36 on 25th October, and received at 13:36 on 25th October.

So far, so good.

I then received the same text again. Literally, the same text. The message details indicate that it was send at 13:36 again, but this copy was received at 13:51.

Okay, I can accept that. A slight network hiccup made it get double delivered.

Then again, at 14:07.

And 18:07.

This is the first one that I responded too. My phone had previously been on silent as I’d been in a meeting and forgot to turn the volume back on.

Then, received it again at 18:24. Details still show it as sent at 13:36.

And again, at 18:24 (again?) on the 26th.

And then at 18:25 on the 27th (ie, today).

So, I’ve received the SAME text message SEVEN times over the course of three days (so far). Seriously?

Is there some problem with the communications between Vodafone and Three’s networks? What the hell is going on?

Update (28th - 18:00)

So, I got a response via Twitter from Vodafone around 10am (still waiting for any comment from Three, even if it is just to say that it isn’t their problem).

The Vodafone representative said that it was “strange” and suggested that it “[c]ould be down to the network where [my] mother is”, suggesting that it’s a localised issue.

I don’t think it is. Since this response, my mother has travelled back to her home (about 170 miles from her parent’s), and sent me a text to let me know that she’s back (and demanding that I not spoil Skyfall for her, since she hasn’t seen it yet (it’s awesome, by the way)). I’ve received that text four times in two hours (so far).

I’ve responded to Vodafone on Twitter to let them know. Let’s see if they respond again.

Update 2 (29th - 22:00)

At this point, both networks have responded on Twitter. I’ve also had indications from two friends of similar problems with the same pair of networks - one with direct experience of the same problem recently.

As of now, the second text from my mother has been received at the following times:

28th: 16:25 (also when it was sent), 17:25, 17:41, 17:56, 21:57

29th: 21:57

I find the fact that 21:57 was repeated (as 18:24 was on the previous message) interesting.

(I know the quote above does not relate solely to the medical aspect, but still).

While the laptop is getting smaller, the USB ports are getting more limited. But more and more devices are using USB port. So this InfiniteUSB can solve this problem.When there is a new USB device plug in, at the same time, it provides one more USB port.

I don’t see the difference between this and a usb hub except that this is more practical.

And what if you want to unplug the first device? A hub is far more practical. You can position it how to like. If you’ve got five devices plugged in this is just going to be a huge lump jutting out of the side of your laptop, probably putting stress on the port from the weight.
